Talent in Chicago is often overlooked and underappreciated. We push, we shout, we sing, drum on buckets & jump into cyphers to be heard. Pilsen’s EMERG has found his audience.
Q: How long have you been on the south side of Chicago?
A: My whole life, I was born and raised in Pilsen! Est 93
Q: What challenges have you faced as a minority?
A: Constantly getting stopped and frisked by policemen. There’s plenty of times I’ve gotten stopped after playing ball at the park walking to my car, just cause I fit the description I’ve gotten arrested!
Q: What pushed you to begin creating music?
A: My brother’s passing motivated me into creating music. Turning something negative and speaking about it in my music has created such momentum. Plenty of people can relate!
Q: When did you realize you could do this as more than a hobby?
A: I began seeing progress, such as getting booked for shows, it was a learning process, but once I fell in love with performing and seeing the crowd’s reaction, that’s when I took it more, I guess you can say, seriously. Ever since I’ve created a fan base, and got respect from artists in the music industry leading to me signing my first music contract!
Q: What has surprised you most about the music business?
A: Everything is simply business. It can be cutthroat, but the most important part is staying true to yourself, and reminding yourself how’d you get there in the 1st place. Keep being great and remain on course.
Q: What do you find most challenging about it?
A: Staying consistent. Given the fact I have 3 children, I’m trying to be the best father I can be while releasing music, traveling, etc. I’m one busy individual!
Q: Do you consider yourself a full-time creative?
A: Yes, I’m the type of artist who leaves the studio and comes up with a video idea as soon as I finish the song! I like to move at my pace.
Q: What would you say are some of your strongest beliefs about investing in yourself?
A: My confidence, and my ability to create something dope from scratch.
Q: Tell me about someone who has influenced your decision to get into music?
A: Not who, but what. My brother’s passing, back in 2009.
Q: What might people be surprised to know about you?
A: Hmm.. I know how to skateboard lol
Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about doing music?
A: Do it, There’s going to be a lot of people telling you they don’t like how you sound blah blah, There’s going to be a lot of ups and downs, it’s up to you on how well you handle it. Be yourself, stay consistent and have fun doing it!
Q: If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing instead?
A: I was always good at sports, not the best but decent lol maybe something having to do with sports.
Q: As a rapper, what’s your favorite type of beat?
A: I’ve made songs on all types of instrumentals, It all depends on how much I like the sound of it.
Q: What areas are your fans from? Is it predominantly the southside of Chicago?
A: Southside of Chicago, California, Texas, Colorado, Mexico to my knowledge but it Will expand in the future!
Q: What do you do when you aren’t working on music?
A: I spend as much time with my kids and try my best to get in the gym to shoot some hoops, which keeps my mind at ease.
Q: You recently signed a record deal, what was that like? Was the decision hard to make?
A: My manager contacted me and we talked and discussed the situation. This has been going on for quite some time, Glady my manager finalized everything. We both agreed on what was best. To be quite honest I was nervous, but excited at the same time! Overall, the best is yet to come!
Q: How can people reach out to book you or collab?
